A significant bout in the Light Heavyweight division between Glover Teixeira and Phil Davis has just been announced for UFC 179.
Teixeira and Davis are ranked within the top 10 at Light Heavyweight, Teixeira fourth and Davis sixth. In addition, they have both fallen short in their most recent outing. The outcome of this bout will determine which one of these men will stay relevant in the division’s title picture, and which one will have to work their way back up the ladder.
Teixeira was recently riding a 20-fight winning streak, including victories over Ryan Bader and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson. This would earn Teixeira a shot at UFC gold in his most recent outing. However, he would fall short against Light Heavyweight king Jon Jones.
Davis was riding a winning streak of his own, while not as impressive as Teixeira’s, Davis’ three-fight streak included a victory over former UFC Light Heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida. Following the victory over Machida, Davis would lose to Anthony Johnson, a fight many favored him to win.
The American wrestler will return to Brazil to take on another Brazilian in Teixeira. Davis is no stranger to fighting in Brazil, he is currently undefeated against Brazilians in Brazil, a rare, but accurate statistic.
UFC 179 will take place on October 25th in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The event will be headlined by a Featherweight title bout between Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes. It has yet to be confirmed, but Teixeira vs. Davis will likely be slated as the co-main event of UFC 179.
