Chael Sonnen on MMA and Religion: ‘God Has Better Things to Do’

I’ll come right out and say it; I’m agnostic, with my leanings being heavily towards atheism. So as you can imagine, there is nothing as obnoxious to me as when a fighter works hard and then puts on a great performance before thanking a higher power for guiding him to victory. If there were a God, why would this all-powerful being be guiding you to win money for beating someone else up? I mean, if that same higher power is letting children die, women get raped and awful atrocities happen around the world, aren’t those priorities really messed up?

Chael Sonnen, who is known for spewing some interesting stuff when he’s interviewed tackled this topic and while his views are from that of a Catholic, they are views that I absolutely agree upon. Hell, most people should be able to agree upon this. It’s cool if you have beliefs, more power to you, but it seems like a weird distortion to think that your professional career of punching someone in the face is being assisted by someone letting people die while he/she does it.

These guys are fist fighting in a steel cage for a paycheck and the applause of a drunken audience. Don’t pretend to be something you’re not.

And don’t bring up God. As a devout Catholic I’m tremendously offended when somebody acts as though God is playing a hand in a fistfight on Saturday night. Newsflash people: God has better things to do.
