Episode 28- UFC 123: Rampage vs. Machida Preview – MMA Nuts
The Palace of Auburn Hills, Michigan will host UFC 123 featuring a slew of former champions. Main card fights include Rampage Jackson vs Lyoto Machida, BJ Penn vs Matt Hughes, George Sotiropoulos vs. Joe Lauzon, Phil Davis vs. Tim Boetsch, and Gerald Harris vs. Maiquel Falcão.
Quinton “Rampage” Jackson comes in fresh off the decision loss to Rashad Evans as he looks to regain relevance in the UFC’s Light Heavyweight division. Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida lost his title via 1st Round knockout to current champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and will attempt to regain his aura of invincibility with a decisive victory.
Former champions Matt Hughes and BJ Penn will meet for the third time to decide once and for all who is the better man at 170lbs. Hughes enters the octagon on a three fight win streak with notable wins over Matt Serra, Renzo Gracie, and Ricardo Almeida. BJ Penn has lost his last two fights to current Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar and will attempt a resurgence to his career by moving up to the Welterweight division. Both fighters are looking to make a statement and will need wins to get back in the mix.
The 155lb weight division just got a whole lot more interesting with the recent announcement of the WEC merging with the UFC. Two of the of the division’s most talented fighters in Joe Lauzon and George Sotiropoulos will collide at UFC 123 to determine who is the closest to getting a shot at the belt. Joe Lauzon is 1-1 in his last two fights with a lackluster performance against Sam Stout and the recent annihilation of Gabe Ruediger. George Sotiropoulos rides in on an 8 fight win streak and is currently undefeated in the UFC. This one should be a war and has fight of the night potential written all over it.
Phil “Mr Wonderful” Davis has been a human wrecking ball during his 7-0 stint as an MMA fighter. Tim “The Barbarian” Boetsch enters with a boatload of experience and an iron chin that will be the biggest test for Davis to date. Both guys are excellent wrestlers and bring strong ground and pound to the table.
Gerald Harris will enjoy welcoming yet another UFC newcomer in Chute Box Academy’s Maiquel Falcão. Harris is undefeated in the UFC with several Knockout of the Night bonuses. Maiquel Falcão enters the sports biggest stage with a very impressive record of 25 wins with 21 by knockout. Don’t blink for this one, as it could be over before it starts.
